FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Historic Reimaginings Receives Gold in the 21st Annual w3 Awards for Best AI Creative Integration

SAN FRANCISCO, California — Historic Reimaginings: AI-Assisted Historical Interpretation for Museums, a project exploring the responsible use of artificial intelligence to help museums interpret artifacts, photographs, and historical records, has received a Gold Award in the 21st Annual w3 Awards in the category AI & Tech Features: Best AI Creative Integration.

The w3 Awards honor excellence in digital content, experiences, and creativity and received thousands of entries from around the world for its 2026 competition. Entries are evaluated by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA), whose jury includes industry professionals from organizations such as Google, Netflix, Microsoft, The Walt Disney Company, the Smithsonian, and Stanford University. Each entry is reviewed by multiple jurors and evaluated for creative, technical, and strategic achievement.

Created by Aric Wilmunder through A Well-Regulated Press, Historic Reimaginings grew out of work with museums and historical organizations to explore how generative AI can help audiences visualize and better understand the past while maintaining a clear distinction between documented history, historical interpretation, and what remains unknown.

“AI can create an extraordinary image in seconds, but historical interpretation requires considerably more than creating an image,” Wilmunder said. “The challenge is determining what we actually know, documenting the sources, working with subject-matter experts, and being completely transparent about where the historical record ends and interpretation begins. That has been the focus of Historic Reimaginings from the start.”

The project combines archival research, historical photographs, museum collections, architectural records, period clothing, material culture, and expert review with AI-assisted visualization. Wilmunder developed the project with contributions from Lori Love, a needlework expert; Perry Palmer, a museum trustee; and Susan Jerome, a historic textile specialist.

The w3 Awards defines Best AI Creative Integration as recognizing the “Most creative use of generative AI to create any element of a project or experience.” Historic Reimaginings received Gold in a category whose other recognized projects included work from American Airlines, Forbes, CGTN Europe, and a project involving the Guggenheim.

The 21st Annual w3 Awards received thousands of entries globally. The competition recognizes work by brands, agencies, institutions, and independent creators, with each entry evaluated on its own merit against standards established by the AIVA. Gold recognition typically requires an average jury score of 9 or above on a ten-point scale.

Historic Reimaginings is part of A Well-Regulated Press’s broader work in historical research, public history, museum interpretation, and educational publishing.
